A Weekend in Slavonski Brod: Steal My Local Itinerary
I’ve been to Slavonski Brod three times now, but this last trip was the first time I actually got to slow down and explore.
The first two visits were for weddings (Slavonia knows how to throw a party, trust me), but when I returned in September 2025, I had a proper weekend to get to know the city and its surroundings.
Here’s everything I did, ate, and loved, and what I think makes Slavonski Brod worth adding to your Croatia itinerary.

Getting to Slavonski Brod
Slavonski Brod is about 2 hours southeast of Zagreb, or 5.5 hours from Split.
The easiest way to get here and explore the area is definitely by car. I always rent mine through this car rental company because they consistently get me the best rates and reliable service.
Day 1: Lake Petnja & Ranch Ramarin
Explore Lake Petnja
We started with Lake Petnja, a popular local izletište (day trip spot). This artificial lake was created in 1968 with the building of a dam, and over time it’s blended so well into the landscape that it feels completely natural.
It’s surrounded by forest walking trails, and you’ll see locals out fishing, swimming, or just soaking up the fresh air. If you want a break from city sightseeing, this is the kind of quiet nature spot that lets you reset.
Lunch at Ranch Ramarin
From there, we headed to Ranch Ramarin, and honestly, I could have spent the entire weekend here. It’s a little oasis outside Brod with a hotel, lakeside bungalows, camping space, and endless activities.
You can horseback ride (I tried it for the first time here and loved it), play tennis or pickleball, cycle, try mini golf, or just relax by the water. They also have their own runway and tiny planes that you can fly in so if you’re up for an adrenaline rush, don’t miss this!
One of the things that makes Ramarin special is the animals. They’ve adopted seven dogs who roam freely around the property, all friendly and eager for belly rubs, plus goats and sheep who are pure entertainment with their goofy expressions.
The food here is another highlight. We tried everything from carp chips and fried pulled pork balls to lamb chops, tomahawk steak, and slow-cooked black Slavonian pig. Think generous portions, rich flavors, and lots of homemade sides like potato croquettes and mashed cauliflower.
They also have their own vineyard in the nearby village of Klokočevik, which makes their wine list even more fun to explore.
Day 2: Exploring Slavonski Brod
Fortress of Brod (Tvrđava Brod)
The Brod Fortress is the city’s most important historical site and once one of the largest fortresses in Europe. Built in the 18th century, it could house up to 4,000 soldiers. Today, it’s a cultural hub used for festivals, events, and concerts. Walking inside gives you a real sense of scale, and it’s wild to imagine watching a modern concert inside a 250-year-old fortress.
Stroll Along the River Sava
The Sava River is the natural border between Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina, and it runs right through Slavonski Brod. You can stroll along the riverside paths, but locals will tell you it’s also Croatia’s biggest river swimming spot.
People really do swim here, especially in summer. Just don’t drift across to the other side unless you have your passport!
Monastery and Church of the Holy Trinity
Right in town you’ll also find the Franciscan Monastery and Church of the Holy Trinity, one of the largest baroque complexes in Slavonia. It’s worth stepping inside for the architecture and sense of history.
Bonus: it’s located right across from the Vatrogasni Dom (Fire Station), which looks like a museum complete with vintage-looking firetrucks parked inside.
Visit a Slavonski Brod Museum
- Dragutin Tadijanović Memorial Home – Dedicated to Croatia’s beloved poet, who lived to be 102. You can see a replica of his Zagreb apartment filled with over 4,000 books — all of which he read.
- Brlić House – The family home of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, often called Croatia’s best children’s writer. This is where she wrote her most famous works, including The Brave Adventures of Lapitch and Croatian Tales of Long Ago.
- Brod Regional Museum – Recently renovated, this is where you’ll find some of the region’s most fascinating archaeological finds, from Ice Age mammoth skulls to Roman artifacts and medieval treasures.
Day 3: Wine Tasting at Stupnički Dvori
About 20 minutes from Slavonski Brod, Stupnički Dvori is set in one of continental Croatia’s most important wine regions, but when you arrive, you’ll swear you’ve been transported straight to Tuscany. Rolling hills, vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see, and a villa-style estate with a beautiful restaurant and terrace make this spot feel worlds away from the city.
You can come just for a wine tasting or dinner, but it’s also possible to stay overnight. The rooms here are elegant and quiet, making it a great base if you want to slow down and spend more time exploring the countryside around Brod. Their kitchen focuses on local ingredients paired with their own wines, so every meal feels special.
Sip a glass of wine on the terrace, stroll through the vineyards, or just linger over dinner while the sun dips behind the hills. Stupnički Dvori has this way of making you feel like you’ve been whisked off to Tuscany, and then the warmth of Slavonian hospitality brings you right back to Croatia.
It’s an unforgettable way to close out a weekend in the region!
Where to Eat in Slavonski Brod
- Pizzeria Uno – Don’t let the name fool you. From the outside it looks like a standard pizzeria, but step into the courtyard and it’s pure Slavonian charm. We ate lamb ispod peke (slow-cooked under an iron bell), homemade gnocchi with a spicy meat sauce, fresh bread straight from the wood oven, and plenty of local wine. The atmosphere feels like eating at someone’s family home, and I loved it.
- My Way – A modern spot with a stylish interior that feels a little more polished than most places in town. It’s got a cigar room for those who want that old-school lounge feel, and the menu is broad enough to please everyone — think steaks, pasta, and good local wines. A nice choice if you’re looking for something a bit more upscale.
- Papo’s – Known for having the best burgers in town, Papo’s is the place to go when you want something casual and satisfying. Big portions, juicy patties, and plenty of toppings. It’s always buzzing with locals, and it’s a good break from the more traditional meat-heavy Slavonian meals.
- Kuća Piva – A local favorite and one of the city’s most unique spots. Kuća Piva (literally “House of Beer”) is divided into three spaces: the Beer Room, Beer Food, and Restaurant Antik. You can go full pub mode with craft beer and casual bites, or settle into Antik for a more traditional restaurant setting. Either way, the beer selection is the best in town, and the atmosphere is lively.
- Ranch Ramarin – Mentioned above, but worth a repeat because the food is that good. If you can’t stay overnight, at least come here for lunch.
Where to Have Coffee in Slavonski Brod
Stop at the brand-new Hotel Park in Slavonski Brod. It’s sleek, modern, and set to become the city’s largest hotel. Even if you’re not staying there, the café is the place to go for the best coffee in town, with both indoor and outdoor seating that’s cozy and stylish.
Where to Stay in Slavonski Brod
- Budget: Apartman Park – A simple but comfortable choice right in town, perfect if you’re just looking for a clean, affordable base while you explore. It’s walking distance to cafés and the Sava riverfront, so you don’t need a car to get around.
- Mid-Range: Studio Apartman Navis – Modern and stylish with everything you need for a short stay, including a small kitchen. It feels more like a boutique apartment than a rental, and the location makes it easy to reach both the fortress and the city center on foot.
- Upscale: Villa Slavonika – A newer villa with spacious, beautifully designed apartments that give you a touch of luxury in Slavonski Brod. It’s quiet, comfortable, and ideal if you want a place that feels like home while still being close to all the main sights.
Final Thoughts
Slavonski Brod surprised me in the best way. It’s a mix of history, culture, and good food, with a slower pace than Croatia’s coastal cities. Between the fortress, the museums, the river, and nearby spots like Ranch Ramarin and Stupnički Dvori, there’s more than enough to fill a weekend.
