The Best Areas to Stay in Zagreb

Where is Zagreb?

If you’re reading this post, you are probably looking to book a hotel in Zagreb and may already know a thing or two about the city. However, if you’ve stumbled upon this post, you might be asking yourself “Where is Zagreb?”

Zagreb is the capital of Croatia and is located in the northwest of the country. It is situated right at the foot of Medvednica Mountain offering easy access to a wide variety of activities from hiking and skiing to trendy cafes and some of the coolest museums in all of Europe. The city’s central location makes it easy to reach all regions of Croatia. In just over two hours you could be exploring the darling hilltop towns of central Istria, or sunbathing on the shimmering beaches of Dalmatia.

Zagreb Neighborhood Guide

When visiting a new city for the first time, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is choosing where to stay. The area you choose will have a big impact on your overall experience, so the key to having the best visit possible is finding the best place to stay in Zagreb. There are many neighborhoods in Zagreb – some are great for sightseeing while others are perfect for easy access to the Zagreb airport.

Deciding on where to stay in Zagreb can be overwhelming, especially for first time visitors. That’s why I’ve put together this mini guide of the best neighborhoods in Croatia’s capital. No matter what your reason for visiting is, this guide will help you find the best place to stay in Zagreb.

Central Zagreb – The Best Place for Sightseeing

Zagreb Lower Town

Central Zagreb is split into two parts: the Upper Town and the Lower Town. The Zagreb Lower Town (also called Donji Grad) is the place to be for first time visitors. If you want to be in the heart of the action and are mainly planning on sightseeing in Zagreb, then look no further – this is the neighborhood for you!

The Lower Town is where you can find some of the city’s most popular tourist attractions like Ban Jelacic Square, the Zagreb Cathedral (officially called the Cathedral of the Assumption), Zrinjevac Park, the National Theater, and Dolac Market. Foodies and coffee lovers will especially love this area of the city as it offers the largest selection of restaurants, cafes, and bars. Overall, Zagreb’s Lower Town is the best place to stay you want to be centrally located and well connected to all the best that Zagreb has to offer.

Upper Town Zagreb (Gornji Grad)

Also part of Central Zagreb, the Upper Town is a mostly pedestrian area made up of cobblestone streets and charming historic buildings. It is a place filled with old-world charm and remnants of Zagreb as it once was – there are over 200 gas lanterns scattered throughout the upper town that are still lit by hand each night! The Upper Town is also home to some of the city’s best museums, including The Museum of Broken Relationships and The Zagreb City Museum. The Upper Town is a better fit for those who prefer staying in an Airbnb in Zagreb as you won’t find any proper hotel options here.

Looking for a unique place to stay during your trip? Check out the coolest Airbnbs in Croatia, or if you’re feeling adventurous, why not go glamping in Croatia?

Jarun – The Best Place for Families

Located on the western side of the Zagreb city center, Jarun remains a favorite neighborhood among families. This area of town is home to Jarun Lake, lovingly referred to as “Zagreb’s Sea” by the locals. It is a great spot for swimming, relaxing, or having a barbecue with friends.

Surrounding the lake are countless cafes with outdoor terraces and plenty of options for recreational activities. Jarun is the long-standing sports hub of the city offering tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts, a softball field, a skate park, an olympic swimming pool, a track, and anything else you need to stay active. It is also worth mentioning that there are many shopping opportunities nearby including the city’s largest shopping and entertainment center, Arena Centar.

Novi Zagreb – The Best Place for Business Travelers

Novi Zagreb is ideal for business travelers who need quick and easy access to the Zagreb airport. This neighborhood is located just ten minutes from the Franjo Tuđman Airport. Novi Zagreb (meaning New Zagreb) is, as the name states, a newer area of the city that has been built up in recent years. It is home to many large businesses and corporate headquarters, making it suitable for business travelers. If you do not plan to do much sightseeing and need a base where you can focus on your business needs, then Novi Zagreb should be at the top of your list.

There are many different neighborhoods in Zagreb, each with their own unique charm. Depending on your reason for visiting, you’ll want to choose an area that fits your needs. If you’re looking to be close to all the action, then downtown Zagreb is the place for you. If you’re interested in learning about the city’s history or exploring its art scene, then Upper Town is a great option. And if you’re looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, then consider staying in Maksimir. Whichever neighborhood you choose, I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful time in Zagreb!

With that covered, let’s check out the best hotels Zagreb has to offer!

The fact that they keep the fruit chilled during breakfast and have a professional making coffee tells me they really care about service here, 10/10 experience.

Guests particularly love the darling courtyard terrace where coffee and refreshments can be enjoyed all day long. Complimentary breakfast is also provided with plenty of choices from freshly made eggs to excellent quality meats, cereals, and breads.

The hotel is particularly magical during Christmastime when the courtyard is decked out in holiday decorations during Advent in Zagreb. Think: twinkling lights, Christmas trees, and plenty of fun photo ops.

Comfort is of utmost priority at Art Hotel Like, so expect pristine sheets and extra fluffy pillows. However, if you are sensitive to noise, you may want to book elsewhere as guests frequently mention being able to hear the rumbling of the passing trams. The hotel does recognize this minor disturbance and provides earplugs in each room for a more comfortable night’s rest.

Croatia Travel Planning Guide

šŸš‘ Should I buy Croatia travel insurance?
10000% YES – Seriously, don’t leave home without it. You never know what can happen on the road (like that time I had to go to urgent care in Thailand for a severe case of dehydration). Luckily I had SafetyWing insurance that covered my bill. Their average plan is $42 for 28 days – that’s $1.50 a day to enjoy peace of mind…just get it. Plus you can adjust your length of coverage to your specific dates of travel, so you could be paying even less than that!

šŸ“± Will my phone work in Croatia?
Maybe – check with your provider to see if you’ll have service while traveling Croatia. If you don’t have service (or it’s too expensive) I recommend getting an eSIM like Airalo. Airalo allows you to have data while traveling without the high costs of roaming. They have super affordable plans available for 190+ countries, including Croatia. Download the app and get your plan before you leave home so that you have data as soon as you touch down in Croatia!

šŸØ What’s the best way to book my Croatia accommodations?
For Croatia hotels, Booking is by far the best site.

šŸ›« What’s the best site to buy Croatia flights?
I always use Skyscanner to find the cheapest flights.

šŸš—  Is it safe to rent a Car in Croatia?
Yes! – In fact, renting a car in Croatia is one of the best ways to see the country! I recommend Discover Cars because they check both local and international rental companies to ensure you get the best deal. (Get your Croatia road trip itinerary here)

šŸ’¦ Is it safe to drink the water in Croatia?
Tap water in Croatia is completely safe to drink, so bring your reusable water bottle and fill up! (Read more)

🪪 Do I need a visa for Croatia?
Depending on where you are coming from you may or may not need a visa to enter Croatia. Check the official Republic of Croatia Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for more information on who should apply for a visa.

Zagreb is a pretty city, but not in the classical sense. The best way I’ve heard Zagreb described by a visitor is “shabby-chic”. As someone that has been living here for 8 years, I don’t disagree. The city is made up of a unique mix of century-old buildings and ancient palaces combined with beautiful and modern architectural gems. The Upper Town is romantic and charming, and the Lower Town features street art, hip cafes, and landscaped city parks.

Which is better Ljubljana or Zagreb?
Both cities have so much to offer and are definitely worth visiting! Luckily, they are located very close to each other (just under a 2-hour drive) so you can visit both of them in one trip.

Is Dubrovnik or Zagreb better?
Dubrovnik is by far the most popular out of the two cities, but don’t let that fool you. Zagreb has a lot to offer, especially outside peak tourist season. You can expect to find concerts, festivals, and various events all year round.

Is Zagreb cheaper than Dubrovnik?
They are quite similar when it comes to prices. This of course depends on a number of factors including what area of town you choose to stay in, what type of accommodation you prefer, where you choose to eat, etc. Generally speaking, Dubrovnik’s Old Town tends to be on the pricier side for food, while it is easier to find more inexpensive local restaurants in Zagreb.
